This project came about in Spring 2024. I was living in an urban area in New England with no wheels. On walks through the city, I noticed that under certain conditions – overcast days, following rainfall, with minimal wind – street and sidewalk puddles produced powerful reflections that appeared almost like portals into another world. And the grain in the asphalt beneath appeared almost like stars in the reflected skies. To make these images, I used a wide-angle lens and placed the camera very close to the ground, often on the lowest setting of my tripod. Patience and timing were key, since the slightest ripple in the puddle destroyed the illusion. While making 8x10 prints in the darkroom, I decided to rotate each image 180 degrees. I was pleased with this series because it is a good example of finding beauty and interest in everyday subject matter.
